Research literature on antiracist education suggests that teachers benefit from strategies that help them reflect upon and respond to racist comments, texts, and videos; defensive emotional responses from students, colleagues, and themselves; and their growing awareness of how (unfortunately) ordinary and common racist attitudes and behaviours are in their classrooms, schools, and communities. In the second session of the DEHR Antiracism and Antioppression Speaker Series, Dr. Cathryn van Kessel will weave together key research from social psychology and education, her research with preservice and early career teachers, as well as her secondary and postsecondary teaching experience to provide participants with concepts and strategies they can use to better prepare for the emotionally-charged situations that often accompany antiracist educational encounters.

This is the second in a series of webinars that will be offered during the 2020-21 school year to provide teachers with pedagogical and leadership professional development related to Antiracism and Antioppression Education. All webinars will be recorded and will be made available as video, audio, and text files for you to access at your convenience. If you have any questions about this series, please email Dan Grassick, the ATA's Diversity, Equity and Human Rights (DEHR) lead.
