What Can I Do When I Have Little Control? [Recording Available]

It is much easier for teachers to recognize and help regulate students when they are in front of us, but how do we support students and families with regulation through a screen or when we are not even accessible to them? If you are interested in learning about emotional regulation, how to identify dysregulation and what it means to co-regulate, this session might be for you. Considering the Emotionality of Antiracist Education [Recording Available]
Research literature on antiracist education suggests that teachers benefit from strategies that help them reflect upon and respond to racist comments, texts, and videos; defensive emotional responses from students, colleagues, and themselves; and their growing awareness of how (unfortunately) ordinary and common racist attitudes and behaviours are in their classrooms, schools, and communities. In the second session of the DEHR Antiracism and Antioppression Speaker Series, Dr. Cathryn van Kessel will weave together key research from social psychology and education, her research with preservice and early career teachers, as well as her secondary and postsecondary teaching experience to provide participants with concepts and strategies they can use to better prepare for the emotionally-charged situations that often accompany antiracist educational encounters.

This is the second in a series of webinars that will be offered during the 2020-21 school year to provide teachers with pedagogical and leadership professional development related to Antiracism and Antioppression Education. All webinars will be recorded and will be made available as video, audio, and text files for you to access at your convenience. Teaching Difficult Histories: Challenging but Necessary Conversations for Social Justice [Recording Available]
“Difficult histories” are “historical narratives and other forms (learning standards, curricular frameworks) that incorporate contested, painful and/or violent events into regional, national or global accounts of the past” (Epstein & Peck, 2018, p. 1). Over the past several years, calls to examine the legacies of people and events in Canada’s past have gained increased awareness in the public eye, including in curricula and schools. In the third session of the DEHR Antiracism and Antioppression Speaker Series, Dr. Carla Peck will explore why teaching and learning difficult histories is among the most complicated and necessary concerns for history education, particularly for developing justice-oriented citizens. If Canada is to protect, maintain, and grow its status as a healthy democracy, it requires a well-educated, engaged citizenry with the capacity to critically engage with such issues.

This is the third in a series of webinars that will be offered during the 2020-21 school year to provide teachers with pedagogical and leadership professional development related to Antiracism and Antioppression Education. All webinars will be recorded and will be made available as video, audio, and text files for you to access at your convenience. Amplifying Black Voices- A conversation with the Black Teachers’ Association [Recording Available]
What began 10 months ago when a handful of Black teachers asked themselves, “Who represents the voice of Black teachers in the province?” has grown into the Black Teachers Association (BTA) of Alberta; a network of 50+ Black educators and 100+ allies from all corners of the province! BTA members are united by a shared commitment to amplify the voices of Black students and teachers and a passion to make Alberta’s classrooms, schools, and communities more inclusive and socially just. February is Black History Month. What better way to spend part of your convention meeting members of the BTA and learning about Black history, culture, arts, and community? All are welcome.
